On October 17th 1879, a petition was given to the Abbot Rous of Banyuls, requesting that a church be built in Cerbère.
Around 1880 when Cerbère was still a hamlet dependant on Banyuls, a church named Sant Salvador de cervera was built. The church was consecrated to Sant Salvador in commemoration of the former name of a small chapel and the valley.
Thanks to the business of Banyuls wine, the town got an attractive building. In recognition of the precious wine, the decoration of the rose window was designed with vine leaves.
